The area of collecting provincial Scottish
silver is a fascinating one and there are many different towns and makers.
Unfortunately, given that they were so small and produced so little silver,
particularly sugar tongs, they are very rare. I have listed below all the
towns from which I have seen sugar tongs.
The collecting of Scottish provincial silver is a very
specialist area and the marks can be very difficult to decipher. If
you do venture into this area then Richard Turner's book on Scottish
Provincial marks will be essential. Even then there can be a lot of
uncertainty over attributions and there is still a lot of work to be done to
catalogue the various makers.
Genuinely attributable Scottish Provincial silver
prices will certainly be at a premium.
