Paisley was a port located just south west of Glasgow. As it fell within 40 miles "West and South" of Glasgow it fell within the the remit of the Glasgow Assay office when it was set up by statute in 1819. William Hannay is the most well known of the Paisley silver-smiths and was a founder member of the Glasgow Goldsmiths Company set up in 1819. The anchor was used as one of their punches, among others. |
