Thomas Whipham's first mark was registered as a large-worker on 20th June 1737. He died on 27th August 1785. There is also record of a son, also called Thomas Whipham, although there is no separate mark entered for him. I have attributed these tongs to Thomas Whipham and dated them at around 1775. These are interesting tongs in that whilst the maker’s mark is very clear, it does not quite match the recorded Thomas Whipham mark. The tongs are a pair of cast sugar tongs, dated c1775, sadly with the usual repair. Click on any picture to enlarge |
