Joseph Scammell entered his first mark as a plate-worker on 11th August 1788. He had died by 1800.

Again, it is quite possible that these are wrongly attributed.  We have several makers with the mark IS:

Joseph Scammell
Joseph Savory I
James Stamp
Joseph Steward II
John Steward

It is therefore quite possible to mix these up! These particular sugar tongs are dated c1786 - 1790 and are bright cut. This particular mark is very difficult to make out as the “I”, “T” and “S” can be very similar with many makers of this period.
