This pair of tongs are flared with bright cut engraving over the whole. They are particularly interesting in that they appear to have the unusual profiled duty mark, whereby the right hand side of the duty mark has been removed. It is believed that this may have been done to indicate the increase in duty in 1797. I have therefore tentatively dated them at c1797.
