This pair of tongs is interesting in that they are bright cut engraved in the standard London style. If it were not for their size and the Edinburgh hallmarks they could be mistaken for any pair of London bright cut engraved tongs. They are nearly 6 inches long and weigh 41 grams. These tongs have the castle and duty mark on one arm and the maker's mark on the other. The tongs have been hallmarked in Edinburgh and are probably dated some time in the 1790's. George Beech is recorded as registering a mark in Edinburgh in 1770. Many thanks to Robert Wilson for help with re-attributing these tongs. I had previously shown them as George Booth of Aberdeen which is clearly wrong. Click on any picture to enlarge |
