These tongs are interesting as they are exactly the same as many pairs of Bateman tongs of the period. There is no sign that the maker’s mark is over-struck but these tongs are very definitely a Bateman style. Without proper evidence we cannot be sure that these tongs were bought from the Bateman factory but it seems highly likely. They are clearly hallmarked Sheffield, 1792.
