Robert Gray is recorded in Jackson as both Edinburgh and Glasgow. We know that there was no assay office in Glasgow between 1784 and 1819 so Robert Gray would have had to have sent his work to Edinburgh for assay, which would explain why we sometimes don’t see Glasgow hallmarks on his work of this period. These tongs ARE hallmarked for Glasgow, dated 1823.
