Jackson records John Bolland’s maker’s mark as “JB” in a serated edge punch dated 1780 and seen on salad servers. Another John Bolland mark is also recorded dated 1801 on dinner forks. Jackson also has a foot-note to state that “The mark of John Bolland also occurs on spoons of 1756”. This does not seem very likely to have been the same John Bolland. He is recorded in the list of quarter brothers and journeymen, dated 1771 – 1772. This ties in with his mark being seen dated 1780. He is not recorded as a freeman of the Dublin goldsmith’s company. Instead he is shown as being found in directories but not on the official list of freemen, dated 1785 – 1798. He is also shown to have had work assayed in 1787/88. Douglas Bennett does not record John Bolland at all and does not have a record of the "JB" mark in a serated punch.
