Jackson shows a maker’s mark of “AN” on the Dublin pewter plate, dated between 1765 and 1812. He attributes this mark to Ambrose Nicklin. There is no other reference to a Dublin mark of “AN” so we cannot be completely sure of the attribution. These tongs are quite special in that the bowls are cast and soldered onto the arms (the solder marks can clearly be seen). They are engraved with a simple feather edged engraving. From the shape of the Harp and Hibernia, the tongs will be dated c1770 to 1775. Click on any picture to enlarge |
