I have attributed these cast sugar tongs to William Pinder, although this is by no means certain as the maker's mark is very difficult to identify. William Pinder entered his first mark on 30th May 1771, as a buckle-maker. I have decided that these must be the most loved pair of tongs that I have seen. Someone must have loved them very much to have had them repaired so often! They are a mess. Even the Lion Passant is not distinguishable, although this may very well be an attempt at avoiding paying hallmarking fees & not be a genuine hallmark at all. This pair of tongs is probably the worst example I have seen for number and quality of repairs.
