Thomas Wintle was George Wintle's brother. George had been Thomas's apprentice. Samuel Wintle was also recorded as a London maker but we are unclear as to his relationship to George or Thomas although he could have been another brother. Both George and Thomas were sons of James Wintle (it gets even more confusing as it appears that George Wintle also has a son and named him James, after his grandfather!). Grimwade records Samuel & Thomas Wintle registering a mark together on 1st October 1778. Samuel Wintle then registered his mark alone on 31st July 1779. We can therefore date these tongs accurately as between October 1778 and July 1779. Notice the Victorian gothic monogram which has been engraved over the top of a previous monogram.
