Mary Sumner entered her first mark on the death of her husband, (William Sumner I), on 18th March 1807 as a spoon-maker. She then entered another mark with her daughter Eliza on 31st August 1809. She was therefore only working on her own for just over 2 years. These tongs are very plain, completely in keeping with other tongs of the period.
