John Priestman registered a mark on 23^rd February 1786 as a spoon-maker. There are several versions of the “IP” maker’s mark and it is not possible to be certain whether this particular mark is John Priestman's. Joseph Preedy would be the other contender but he was in partnership with William Pitts between 1791 and 1799 and there are several tongs with the “IP” mark dated between these dates.
