Robert Gray is recorded in Jackson as both Edinburgh and Glasgow. We know that there was no assay office in Glasgow between 1784 and 1819 so Robert Gray would have had to have sent his work to Edinburgh for assay, which would explain why we donít see Glasgow hallmarks on his work of this period. The Edinburgh mark is shown as 1806 and the Glasgow marks, 1776 Ė 1784. None of the marks shown by Jackson appear quite as the mark on these tongs. These are a superb pair of early bright cut tongs. They have the incuse duty mark dating them between 1784 and 1786.
